History of the Wolf
The wolf is a mammal of the family Canidae, a group that includes dogs, coyotes, jackals and foxes. The wolf is the largest member of the family, with males averaging between 80 and 115 pounds, and females 75 to 85 pounds. Gray wolves range in color from nearly white to black, but most are shades of gray in various patterns. They have long legs, big feet and a bushy tail. In the wild, wolves typically live 10 to 12 years old, but can live as long as 16 years.
The best known subspecies is the gray wolf (Canis lupus), which inhabits North America, Europe, Asia and North Africa. It is the most common wolf in North America and its popularity has made it one of the most recognized animals in the world. Other subspecies include the red wolf (Canis rufus), found in North America; the Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis), found in Ethiopia; and the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), found in South America.
Wolves are social animals that live in packs of six to ten individuals. The pack is a family unit consisting of a breeding pair (the alpha male and female) and their offspring. The size of a pack’s territory depends on prey availability, but it can range from 50 square miles for a small group of wolves living in an area with abundant prey to more than 3,000 square miles for a large group living in an area with scarce prey.
