Introduction

Tokyo Ghoul is a Japanese dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Sui Ishida. It was serialized in Shueisha’s seinen manga magazine Weekly Young Jump between September 2011 and September 2014, and it has been collected in fourteen tankōbon volumes as of August 2014. The story follows Ken Kaneki, a college student who is transformed into a half-ghoul after an unsuccessful attempt to eat him by another ghoul called Rize Kamishiro. Ghouls are humanoid creatures that live amongst humans, hiding their true identities in order to blend in with society, preying on human flesh to survive. Kaneki joins the ghouls at Anteiku as one of their own to protect himself and others like him.

Tokyo Ghoul was first published as a one-shot in Shueisha’s Jump Square magazine on September 8, 2011. On October 20, 2011, Tokyo Ghoul began serialization in Weekly Young Jump. The series concluded on September 18, 2014, with 144 chapters published in total. Viz Media has licensed the manga for English release in North America; it published the first volume on June 16, 2015.
