History of Pi Day
Most people know that Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3.14), but did you know that the history of Pi Day dates all the way back to 1889?
In 1889, Physicist Luigi Guido was working on a paper about electrical circuits when he realized that the circumference of a circle divided by its diameter was always the same number, no matter the size of the circle. This number was 3.14159… and since Guido was from Italy, he decided to use the Italian spelling of “circle” – “pizza” – when referring to this never-ending number.
Guido’s paper was published on March 14th, which just so happened to be Albert Einstein’s birthday. And so, Pi Day was born!
It wasn’t until 2009 that Pi Day really started to gain traction as a national holiday. That year, Congresswoman Gabby Giffords helped pass a resolution making March 14th “National Pi Day” in honor of Guido’s discovery. And since then, Pi Day has been celebrated by math lovers all across the country!
