Legend has it that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, was walking through the woods one evening and was inspired by the sight of the stars shining through the branches of a fir tree. Luther is said to have then brought a fir tree into his home and decorated it with candles to recreate the scene he’d witnessed in nature.
Whatever its origins, the Christmas tree has become a beloved part of holiday traditions around the world.
