Who is Richard Pryor?

Richard Franklin Lennox Thomas Pryor was an American stand-up comedian, actor, and writer. He reached a broad audience with his trenchant observations and storytelling style, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential stand-up comedians of all time.

Pryor began his career in the early 1960s as a comedian on the hotel circuit, before making his film debut in 1964’s The Youngians. From 1966 to 1967, he served in the U.S. Army. After being discharged, he began working as a comic in small clubs. In 1968, he signed with the Black Fox agency and began appearing on television variety shows such as The Ed Sullivan Show and Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show.

Pryor’s breakout role came in 1969 when he starred in the ensemble comedy Up In Smoke alongside Cheech & Chong. He appeared in numerous films throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including Silver Streak (1976), Mel Brooks’ history spoof Young Frankenstein (1974), Blue Collar (1978), Richard Pryor: Live & Smokin’ (1971), Which Way Is Up? (1977), Greased Lightning (1977), Bustin’ Loose (1981), Harlem Nights (1989) , See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989) .I’m Gonna Get You Sucka!(1988).

Pryor was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1986 and retired from stand-up comedy soon afterward. He died of a heart attack at his home in California on December 10, 2005 at the age of 65
