Red Fox was born in Jamaica in the early 1940s. His mother was a singer and his father was a well-known bandleader. His parents divorced when he was young, and he was raised by his maternal grandparents. He began singing in his grandfather’s band when he was a child, and he made his first recording when he was just eleven years old.
Fox moved to the United States in the late 1950s, and he began working as a session musician. He played on numerous records throughout the 1960s, including albums by Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, and Wilson Pickett. He also toured with Womack and Pickett, and he appeared on several television shows, including The Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
In the early 1970s, Fox began working with producer/songwriter Chips Moman. Together, they wrote several hits for artists like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Willie Nelson. Fox also recorded several solo albums during this time, but none of them were particularly successful.

Redd Foxx was born John Elroy Sanford on December 9, 1922, in St. Louis, Missouri. His father, Fred Sanford, was a local Baptist minister. His mother, Mary Hughes (née Hughes; 1884–1977), was a homemaker and housekeeper. He had three older siblings: Fred G. Sanford Jr. (1915–2000), Herbert cartoonist and animator Lawrence “Larry” Joachim Sanford (1918–2005), and Julie Sanford(1921–2000).
