Early Life
Rajinikanth was born on 12 December 1950, in a Marathi family in Bangalore, Mysore State (now Karnataka). He was the fourth child of Ramoji Rao Gaekwad, a police constable, and his wife Jijabai. An autodidact and voracious reader, Rajinikanth developed an interest in acting while attending a play starring Shivaji Ganesan. At 13 he joined the Shivaji Rao Drama troupe run by Kalyanasundaram. Rajinikanth became a stage actor during 1974–1980, performing in various mythological roles. Before venturing into films, he appeared on stage and in television serials.
Acting Career
Rajinikanth’s acting career began with two dramas in 1972, one of which he co-wrote. He played the lead roles in several other Tamil dramas that year, including K. Balachander’s Apoorva Ragangal and A. P. Nagarajan’s Mullum Malarum. Rajinikanth’s first film appearance was in the 1975 Tamil film, Apoorva Raagangal, directed by K. Balachander, in which he played a minor role of an abusive husband. The film was not a commercial success but his superb performance won him many accolades from critics who hailed him as the “new MGR”.
Political Career
Rajinikanth’s political career has been the subject of much speculation, but he has never formally declared his candidacy for any political office. In December 2017, he met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed the possibility of entering politics. In January 2018, he announced his intention to launch a new political party in Tamil Nadu.
Personal Life
Rajinikanth was born into a Marathi family in Bangalore, Mysore State (present-day Karnataka), India. His mother was a housewife and his father Ramoji Rao Gaekwad, a police constable, had also worked as a bus conductor. After his father’s retirement from work, the family moved to the city of Chennai (then Madras). His ancestors hailed from Nachikuppam in Chengalpet district. He was named Shivaji Rao Gaekwad after Chhatrapati Shivaji, a Maratha warrior King, and later Padma Bhushan winner Ramoji Rao, and subsequently came to be known simply as Rajinikanth. He has three brothers and three sisters; one of his brothers is an actor named Sathya Narayana Rao Gaekwad who plays supporting roles under the screen name Raghuvaran; Rajinikanth later helped him secure work in films.
Rajinikanth grew up speaking Marathi at home and Kannada outside school. At the age of 12 began working as a bus conductor for the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation in Bengaluru (now Bangalore). After completing his schooling at Ramakrishna Math Secondary School near Basavanagudi he worked as a carpenter for six months with AIDWA and also briefly dabbled as an insurance agent and joining Western Railway’s Accounts Department in Mumbai through suburban railway services between Mumbai (then Bombay) and Vidyavihar (Borivali East), on the Dadar-Vidyavihar-Ghatkopar suburban line. It was during these years that Rajinikanth knew about films being made in Madras with South Indian dialects different from that which he was used to speaking in Bengaluru: “I did not even know that films were shot like that because people spoke only Kannada where I hailed from.”
Filmography
Rajinikanth is an Indian actor who has appeared in over 150 films, predominantly in Tamil cinema. He began his career as a bus conductor before moving into acting. After gaining recognition in Tamil Nadu, he moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in Bollywood. Rajinikanth has also worked in other regional film industries, including Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi.
Rajinikanth’s first film appearance was in the 1975 Tamil film Apoorva Raagangal, directed by K. Balachander, who cast him as an arrogant college student who falls for an older woman. He subsequently appeared in Balachander’s Mohanlal-starrer 1976 Tamil film Bairavi and the Telugu film Anthuleni Katha, directed by Chennai-born K. Viswanath. In 1977, he starred opposite Sridevi in Balachander’s Tamil remake of the Bengali-language film Hondaa PataakaHaaDiiMeraGaon(1978), which went on to become his breakthrough role. He subsequently worked with Viswanath on the 1979 Telugu film SaakshiGhumti Hai Pyara Pyaraand the 1981 Hindi film Ek Duuje Ke Liye.
Awards and Honours
Rajinikanth has won several awards throughout his career, including the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor and the Filmfare Best Tamil Actor Award. He was also honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2016.
