The idea for the monument was first proposed by John Gutzon Borglum, a Danish-American sculptor, in 1923. Borglum was commissioned by the state of South Dakota to create a sculpture to commemorate the American West. He chose Mount Rushmore, a granite mountain in the Black Hills region, as the location for his sculpture.
Borglum began carving the faces of the presidents into the mountain in 1927. The project was not completed until 1941, due to a number of challenges, including funding shortages and inclement weather.
