Gruden’s family
Gruden was born in Tiffin, Ohio, on August 17, 1963, the son of Kathy (née Adams), a teacher, and Jim Gruden, a graduate of Bowling Green State University who played running back for the Findlay Oilers semi-pro football team and was later one of the first Vietnam War casualties from Hancock County, Ohio. Gruden is the eldest of five brothers: Jay, Tim (who served two terms as Mayor of Gospel Island, Florida), James Eldren “J. D.” (deceased), and Tampa Bay Buccaneers surgeon Bruce. making him the only coach to have a brother who is also an NFL head coach. Jon’s father died at age 40 in a car accident on April 13, 1978 in Ada, Ohio when Jon was just 14 years old. Gruden began his coaching career while attending Clay High School in South Bend because his mother wouldn’t allow him to play football. He then went on to become an assistant at Joilet Catholic High School beforeaccepting a position as offensive assistant at Southeast Missouri State University in 1989 under Head Coach Mort Olson. After three seasons with Southeast Missouri State he returned to his alma mater for one season as offensive line coach before leaving for Central Michigan University where he would serve as tight ends coach for two seasons under Dick Flynn (1991–92) and Herb Deromedi (1993).
