Devonta Smith jokes about being fired
In a recent interview, former Sixers’ jumbotron operator Devonta Smith joked about being fired after the team’s infamous “Philly specialty” ran Afloat.
“I was just hired to push a button, you know?” said Smith. “I didn’t know what was going on.”
Smith was referring to the incident where the Sixers’ jumbotron ran a graphic of a cheesesteak with an image of player Dario Saric in the middle instead of star center Joel Embiid.
“I was like, ‘What the hell is this?” said Smith. “I’m not pushing that button.'”
Smith was eventually fired from his job and has since moved on to other ventures. However, he still looks back on the incident with a sense of humor.
“It’s all good,” said Smith. “I got other buttons to push.”
Sixers fans react to Devonta Smith’s joke
Devonta Smith, the former Sixers employee who was fired after a video of him making a lewd joke about Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz went viral, took to Twitter on Tuesday to defend himself.
“I would like to sincerely apologize for the offensive language I used in a recent video that circulated on social media,” Smith wrote. “It was inappropriate and wrong, and I am deeply sorry.”
Sixers fans, however, were not quick to forgive or forget.
Many took to social media to express their displeasure with Smith’s joke, with some even calling for his immediate reinstatement.
Others, however, were more understanding, arguing that while the joke was in poor taste, Smith should not have been fired over it.
Either way, it’s clear that Sixers fans are divided on the issue.

“I just lost my job because I made a joke,” he added. “I’m really not even tripping.”
It’s unclear if Smith will be able to find another job in the sports world, but if he can’t, he might have to resort to other means of making a living.
