A Priest, a Rabbi, and a Minister Walk Into a Cemetery…
It might sound like the beginning of a bad joke, but it’s actually the premise of a new book by Erika Heidewald called “A Priest, a Rabbi, and a Minister Walk Into a Cemetery…” The book is a collection of jokes, stories, and anecdotes about death, dying, and dealing with grief.
While the book is sure to bring a smile to your face, it also has a serious message about how humor can help us deal with the inevitable realities of death. Heidewald spoke with us about why she decided to write the book, what she hopes readers will take away from it, and some of her favorite jokes from the collection.
Q: What inspired you to write this book?
A: My mom passed away suddenly when I was 28 years old, and humor was one of the things that got me through that difficult time. There were lots of days when I didn’t think I could keep going, but making myself laugh – even if it was just for a few minutes – made me feel better and gave me the strength to keep going. I wanted to share that experience with others who might be going through tough times.
Q: What do you hope readers will take away from the book?
A: First and foremost, I hope they laugh! But I also hope they see that humor can be an important tool for dealing with difficult situations. It’s not always easy to find something to laugh about when you’re grieving, but if you can find even just one thing that make you smile, it can make a big difference.
Q: Do you have a favorite joke from the book?
A: One of my favorites is actually from my mom – she used to tell it all the time. It’s not technically a “joke” per se, but more of a funny story. It goes like this: “A man dies and goes to Heaven. When he gets there, he asks St. Peter if he can have a tour of the place. St. Peter agrees and starts showing him around. They go into one room and there’s a man sitting at a desk with his head in his hands. St. Peter tells him that he looks really sad and asks what’s wrong. The man replies that he was an accountant on Earth and he’s just realized that all his life he did nothing but add up numbers. He says it feels like his life was pointless and wasted. St. Peter tries to comfort him by telling him that in Heaven everyone’s life has meaning and purpose – even accountants! The man brightens up at this and thanks St. Peter for his reassurance. Then they leave the room and go into another where there’s another man sitting at a desk with his head in his hands looking equally as sad as the first guy did. StPeter asks him what’s wrong and he replies that he was an accountant on Earth too and he feels exactly like the first guy does – like his life was pointless and wasted because all he did was add up numbers all day long.”
I Told My Friend I Wanted to Be Buried at Sea…
I told my friend I wanted to be buried at sea. He said, “You can’t do that, you’ll get eaten by sharks.” I told him, “No, I’ll be dead.”
